UNIVERSITY COURSESUHI offers a post graduate MSc in Interpretation – Management and Practice. In addition Lews Castle College offers a module in Environment and Heritage Interpretation The Department of Art History at the University of St. Andrews offers a Post-graduate diploma in Museum and Gallery Studies, through both full-time and part-time routes. In addition it also offers a certificate leading to Associateship of the Museums Association. Other Universities offering higher qualifications in Museum Studies are Leicester and Newcastle Universities. IN SERVICE LEARNING and CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD)The heritage sector in the Highlands and Islands is very lucky to have access to its own subsidised training scheme. Heritage Skills is an RDCF-funded scheme which offers free training courses in both museums specific skills and business generic ones. Subsidised for accommodation and travel are available to all volunteers and employees in heritage sector in the Highlands and Islands. The courses are run by top-quality trainers, and are located all over the catchment. Scottish Museum Council has an active specialised training schedule updated twice yearly or so. It is bookable on-line and some bursaries may be available. HIE’s own Learningworks offers a searchable database of generic training opportunities. University of Leicester offers reasonably priced open-learning professional development packs in evaluating learning, social inclusion, oral history, e-learning and project management for museums. The Museum Association offers several CPD (Continuing professional development) schemes. TIP SHEETS AND INFORMAL RESOURCESHI-Arts offers tip sheets on Audience Development. Though primarily for the arts events sector there is much that is generally useful to heritage venues. GEM has some very useful and specific “how to” and advice sheets. The SMC has a list page of museum related tip sheets under various headings. Each topic has a further list with several items. The ShowScotland 2007 event has a good event management guide. The MDA (Museums Documentation Association) offers an extensive list of factsheets under the headings documentation, information technology and legal issues. |
